Milk donor, Emely, has advice for fellow moms who are helping other babies with their extra breastmilk. She stresses the importance of hydration and finds that eating oatmeal for breakfast helps milk production. She says, “Remember, even one ounce can make miracles!”

Emely’s own breastfeeding journey did not start out smoothly. Her daughter, Sofia, was born struggling to breathe and was admitted into the NICU. This scary experience motivated Emely to produce enough breastmilk, knowing it was best for her baby’s recovery and development. Sofia ended up exceeding doctors’ expectations and was able to go home three days later.

Eventually, Emely produced more milk than Sofia needed. Her freezer was full of breastmilk, and she wanted it to go to good use. Remembering that donor milk had been offered in the NICU, Emely decided to become a donor to help other babies. She found the screening process easy and fast and has donated approximately 800 ounces so far.

Emely says, “Donating milk means a lot to me. Although it may seem like a small way to help, I know that it feels BIG to the families of sick babies.”
