Megan and Mac’s baby boy, Matthew, was born earlier than they had anticipated. When he arrived at 33 weeks, Matthew went straight to the NICU at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
During Matthew’s one month NICU stay, Megan was unable to produce an adequate amount of breastmilk. While she waited for her breastmilk supply to fully come in, Matthew received pasteurized donor human milk from Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas (MMBNT). This was the first time Megan was introduced to MMBNT’s mission.
Months later, circumstances shifted when Megan ended up with a surplus of milk. Matthew and Megan then converted from recipients to donors.
“MMBNT stepped in for my son when he was at his most vulnerable and I couldn’t provide for him.” Megan said.
Donating her breastmilk meant she could help another mother feel hopeful instead of helpless.
“Not being able to provide breastmilk for your baby is a defeating feeling that is hard to explain,” Megan said, “I hope the mother[s] receiving my [breastmilk] donation[s] know they are loved, cared for, and that they are enough.”
Today, Matthew is a healthy one-year old and Megan is a retired donor. Her donations totaling 2,670 ounces have undoubtedly provided invaluable gifts of hope.
