The winter season is a time for colds, coughs and congestion. When a baby catches a cold, the best remedy is a mother’s milk because it provides necessary antibodies and nutrients to fight illness. Nursing can be a difficult process for a sick baby, but breast milk is easily digested. If your baby is ill and has a difficult time breathing and nursing at the same time, try these helpful hints:
- Use drops of breast milk and a rubber suction bulb to gently clear the baby’s nose before nursing. This will help your little one breathe more easily.
- Keep your baby in an upright position while breastfeeding. Use pillows to prop them up if needed. The more upright baby is, the better.
- Nurse in a steamy bathroom by running a really hot shower and sitting in a chair outside of it. The steam helps relieve and break-up congestion.
