To freeze, or not to freeze? Milk donated to the milk bank should be frozen (unless you just pumped it). Please freeze your milk as soon as possible after pumping. Make sure to leave ½ inch at the top of the bag or container, for this allows the milk to expand as it freezes. If breastmillk is kept in a regular freezer, it can last up to three months. If stored in a deep freezer, it can last up to six months! A helpful hint: Use care when freezing bags of breastmilk, making sure that the bag is zipped completely shut and the bags are not frozen together. To prevent bags from sticking together you can use paper towels, newsprint or even recycled paper. We provide high quality breast milk storage bags to all moms free of charge. In preparation for drop-off, you first must first pass a phone screening as a milk donor with one of our donor mom coordinators. When delivering your milk, we ask that you place your milk containers or bags in a plastic bag and enclose a piece of paper with your last name and donor identification number. For drop-off locations, please visit http://www.texasmilkbank.org/content/drop-locations-new. If you do not live near the milk bank or one of our drop-off locations, please call us (817-810-0071). We will send a kit that includes an insulated shipping container, prepaid shipping label, and instructions for shipping your milk. You will need to ship your milk to the milk bank on dry ice and we will be happy to help you locate where to purchase dry ice. We’ll also reimburse you for the cost of the dry ice; simply send your sales receipt.
