Donor Mom Spotlight: Lara Trail

Lara Trail McKinney, TX My son CJ is now 15 months-old and I am still pumping away! I have been pumping since day one, but we had latch problems which led to the vicious cycle of attempting to nurse, tears, refusal, pump, bottle then finally a nap, all to be repeated every two hours. I tried everything. After six weeks of this and seeing multiple lactation consultants about his latch, I resigned myself to exclusively pumping; however, I was still determined to provide my son with my breastmilk. I was discouraged by lactation consultants and various websites that said my milk supply would never be able to keep up and that I would have to supplement with formula. I didn’t want to give up, so I pumped every three hours for at least 30 minutes, around the clock, no matter what. With a lot of luck and a lot of late night pumps, I ended up with a huge supply and two overflowing freezers. I was interested in donating my milk, so I simply Googled and came across MMBNT.  The sign up process was very simple and I have donated 6,756 ounces thus far. I would love for more women to be educated about exclusive breast pumping as an option for anyone who won't or can't nurse for whatever reason.  I could have bought several breast pumps for what I would have paid for formula, plus the health benefits breastfeeding provides for both mom and baby are irreplaceable. Pumping has become so much easier and I am still an active donor. It’s a blessing that I was able to produce so much milk and my heart swells knowing that I have helped other babies who so desperately need it. It actually makes it hard to think about retiring the pump.
