Amanda Chavez Dallas, TX I ran home for lunch one afternoon, just in time to catch the news on WFAA. It mostly serves as background noise while I am at home, but something I heard that day caught my attention. They featured a nonprofit organization that accepted donor human milk. As a nursing mother, I was intrigued and had to learn more. I was doing everything in my power to make sure I was offering my son, Cruz, all of the nutrition I could possibly provide. I couldn’t stop thinking about the mothers who felt so helpless about breastfeeding, and I knew donating was something I needed to do. That afternoon I called The Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas and requested information to begin the donor process. I started donating to The Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas in March of 2012. I donated 120 ounces within four months, and do not regret a single drop. It took up a lot of freezer space to store the milk, and remember receiving strange responses when guests opened my freezer; however, after all was said and done, I felt like a super hero. I know my milk has helped preemie or sick babies as well as a mother's sanity! The service that The Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas provides is unlike any other. To be able to donate to such an amazing cause is incredible. All babies need the nutrition that can only be found in breastmilk, and there has to be other mothers like myself who are willing to donate. Cruz is now 16 months old and an all-around boy! To say he is active would be an understatement. He learns new things every day and I feel like I have to catch my breath just to keep up. If I am blessed with more children in the future, I will definitely donate again to the Milk Bank. Every mother wants and deserves to offer their child the best, and if I can help another mother to do so, then I will.
