Have you ever heard the saying: Tragedy + Time = Comedy?
Well, I think many of us that have raised kids can more easily relate to this saying when you replace the word Tragedy with ‘Challenges.” Because, really, sometimes doesn’t it seem like every day is a challenge?
Thinking back to when I was a new mom – more than 20 years ago – I find myself remember an embarrassing moment as a new nursing mom. With time on my side, I can now see this Tragedy as Comedy!
When my oldest child, Sam, was about 4 weeks old, I left him at home with his dad and ran out to the grocery. I am racing through the store, hurrying to get back home for his next feeding when an elderly lady with a cane stopped me and said in a whisper, “Honey, your milk is leaking.”
I froze, looked down and grabbed my shirt. My shirt was dry. I looked at the lady in confusion. The lady said again, a little louder this time, “Honey, your milk is leaking. “
I again grabbed my shirt and looked down. Early on, I really had a problem with leaking and felt like my shirt and bra were soaking wet all of the time. I felt confused, embarrassed and puzzled, and wasn’t sure what she was talking about!
Finally, the lady took her cane, tapped my grocery cart and pointed to the milk carton in my cart and said loudly, “YOUR MILK IS LEAKING!” She then walked off. I am sure she thought that there was something really wrong with me, but at that point in my life the word ‘milk’ only meant one thing!
Do you have an embarrassing moment? Motherhood is full of them!
