Hello everyone out there in blog land! My name is Amy Vickers and I am the Executive Director here at the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas. We are all so excited about our blog and want to use it as a place that supports and celebrates breastfeeding. We also want to give everyone an inside look at how the milk bank operates and tell you more about the people who work with our donor and recipient moms, as well as the hospitals and lactation consultants who take care of the littlest babies.
We’ve enjoyed sharing helpful information and inspirational stories with you. We’ll continue to write and share posts just like that, and also begin to introduce some of our staff and board members.
So here goes -- I am Amy, the director of the milk bank. In my “former life” I was a NICU nurse.
I LOVE preemies and from the moment I met my first preemie, back when I was a nursing student, I knew I was meant to be an NICU nurse. Once I had my own kids and learned so much about breastfeeding and the power of human milk, I knew that I had to become a lactation consultant. So I did, and I enjoyed it immensely.
In 2004, I was given the opportunity to work at the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas, a newly developed milk bank. This new job let me combine two of my passions and I can say that I’m grateful every day that I get to work here.
If you are like me, then you want to know about the personal lives of people that you meet either in-person or online. I have been married to Keith for 23 years and we have a daughter, Mary (18) and a son, Sam (20). As of August 2012 they both went away to college and we now are empty-nesters! On the weekends you can find us at flea markets and garage sales.
Thanks again for reading our blog! You will be hearing more from me and from other staff from time to time. And, if there is a topic you want to see on our blog, then share it in the comments.
