The Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas was established in 2003 for the purpose of improving the survivability and enhancing the development of premature and critically ill infants in the North Texas area by providing human milk and nutrition. Our mission is very dear to our hearts and we value each individual who contributes and supports The Milk Bank.
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC), is an organization we are proud to support because its mission is to serve pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding women, infants and children who are at nutritional risk. We appreciate the fact that WIC encourages women to breastfeed and understands the nutritional benefits of breast milk for a child’s health.
In 2010, WIC served 9.17 million women, infants and children each month in all 50 states. WIC mothers are highly encouraged to breastfeed and are given additional benefits including:
- WIC mothers who breastfeed their infants are provided information and support through counseling and breastfeeding educational materials.
- Breastfeeding mothers receive a greater quantity and variety of foods than mothers who fully formula feed their infants, with mothers fully breastfeeding their infants receiving the most substantial food package.
- Breastfeeding mothers are eligible to participate in WIC longer than non-breastfeeding mothers.
- Breastfeeding mothers may receive follow-up support through peer counselors.
- Breastfeeding mothers may receive breast pumps and other aides to help support the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding.
