From Mother to Mouth

A flow chart on how the milk flows and it impacts the Milk Bank.
Used and adapted from Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin

Have you ever wondered what happens to the milk at a HMBANA Milk Bank? This flow chart takes you on the path from Mother to Mouth!

  • After a breastfeeding mother contacts the Milk Bank, she goes through a phone screen and blood draw (paid for by the Milk Bank).
  • Once approved, the mother is able to donate her frozen expressed breastmilk to the Milk Bank.
  • Individual mothers' breastmilk is poured into flasks and then pooled.
  • The milk is then poured into three ounce bottles and pasteurized.
  • After testing for bacteria, the Foss Milk-O-Scan analyzes the milk's nutritional content.
  • The pasteurized milk goes back into the freezer until a physician prescribes it for an infant in the hospital.
