What is an IBCLC?
An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. IBCLC is the highest level credential for health care professionals who specialize in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs must go through extensive educational and clinical training before sitting before a board exam. An IBCLC is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners®, Inc. under the direction of the US National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
When should I see an IBCLC?
While some mothers prefer to contact an IBCLC when they are having breastfeeding issues, others make a connection before birth. IBCLCs can offer prenatal consultations, teach breastfeeding classes, and host breastfeeding support groups. Their goal is to help moms and babies reach their breastfeeding goal.
How do I find an IBCLC?
You can verify that your lactation consultant is an IBCLC using the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiner's registry. The International Lactation Consultants Association has a "Find a Lactation Consultant" search for practicing IBCLCs who work in either private practice or in clinical settings.
