This machine may look like a simple stainless steel box. However, this pasteurizer represents the latest technology in human milk processing. And human milk processing equals safety for premature and critically ill babies. Pasteurizers designed specifically for human milk preserve immunological properties while destroying potential harmful viruses and bacteria. One in eight babies in the United States is born prematurely, putting them at risk for life-threatening infections if fed infant formula instead of human milk. Preemies fed human milk are substantially protected from devastating diseases and have significantly improved rates of survival, growth and development. preemie-feetIn February 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics published an updated statement regarding breastfeeding and the use and benefits of human milk. The statement notes that hospitals and physicians should recommend human milk including donated breastmilk, if a mother’s own is not available. Subsequently, increased acceptance, demand and utilization has required more donor milk to be pasteurized and dispensed each year. In 2014, Mothers' Milk Bank of North Texas dispensed a record of 441,295 ounces and is on track to process approximately 530,000 ounces in 2015.
